Guide To A Six Pack
My desktop, wallpaper, all files are gone. There’s a big dbCache file suddenly. Can someone help me?
No idea what’s happening. “System Restore” not a remedy. Haven’t downloaded anything new, all Norton antivirus is up-to-date.
BUT, there’s a 400 MB dbCache file that looks like it appeared 3 weeks ago in my Recycle Bin. I don’t know where that would have just come from. Could this be where my files are? If so, how do I restore it all?
Here’s my setup – it’s a PC:
Dell Dimension 3000 w/ Pentium 4 2.8GHz, 512 MB RAM
Running Windows XP Home Ed. ver. 2002 w/ Service Pack 2
We have six user configs set up. All are unaffected except for two of them – mine and my nephew’s – and only mine has lost my wallpaper (my nephew still has that, at least).
I’m praying that somebody will know what’s going on. Or, can somebody give me a really good web resource that will guide me through troubleshooting?
Have you tried to restore the file by right-clicking and selecting “Restore”? This may help. I’ve never heard this case quite this bad before. A cousin of mine had a similar problem. After losing all of his documents to the Recycle bin and being unable to recover it he turned to me (the self-proclaimed computer guy in training). I suggested that he check with Microsoft and download a program that does a “self-check” of the system and identifies where things went wrong. Two weeks later, he comes back to me and says that the tool found that an update from Windows had been missed and the updates that followed were relying on the missed one. Since it wasn’t there, the updates took up residence in his hard drive. The computer recognized them as being more important than his documents and replaced the documents with the information of the updates.
I’m guessing that this is what happened to yours. Either run the tool from Microsoft or take it to your nearest PC repair shop.
